Two limited-edition racing models SM 530RR & SM 450 RR

Racing Husqvarna SM RR Bikes 2009

Husqvarna SM RR 2009

To celebrate this success, Husqvarna has decided to present two limited-edition racing models this year, the SM 450RR and the SM 530RR. Both models will be fitted with the same racing components as the machines ridden by Adrien Chareyre, Gerald Delepine and Thomas Chareyre.

Now real off-road enthusiasts can take to the track on the same machines as world champions. The machines will have a completely new look starting from a new supermotard front mudguard and a special colour scheme to highlight their competitive, winning nature. The saddle has been specially designed to offer the rider better when accelerating.

The bikes will offer a TIG welded frame with adjustable steering head just like on the official Team Husqvarna machine as well as a shortened, black anodised swingarm to improve traction and manoeuvrability. The one-piece steering plate is made from anodised Ergal and the increased diameter steering pivot is in aluminium. The RRs will have Alpina tubeless STS rims with a 120/70 x 16.5 tyre at the front and a Dunlop 170/55 x 17 slick at the rear. The brakes are the real news item for this year with a one-piece caliper and pump.

The SM 450 RR and SM 530 RR have “Wave” discs with a 310mm disc up front for a better compromise between adjustability and stopping power. As regards suspension - up front there are 50 mm Marzocchi forks with a sealed cartridge unit and anodised black fork bottoms while, at the rear, there is a Sachs racing aluminium-bodied shock absorber and the frame is painted black.

The more powerful “race” engine is mated to a six-speed box derived from motocross versions as are the STM slipper clutch, the electric starter, the 41 mm Keihin carburettor and the special cams and pistons. In collaboration with Arrow, Husqvarna engineers designed a tailor-made exhaust system for the SM530 RR.
Like that on the SM 450 RR, it is made from titanium and features twin silencers. The heat shield is also made from titanium. The twin-coloured anodised aluminium filler cap is new as are the anodised Ergal racing handlebar clamps. These are one-piece items bearing the legendary Husqvarna name.

The motorcycles come supplied with spare sprockets and crown wheels and a set of steering rake sockets as well as a racing type side stand, racing brake and clutch levers and hand guards The machines are not homologated for use on the road and can only be ridden on a track. They will be available from early December through orders made through the Husqvarna sales network.

US Supermoto News

Infineon Raceway will step in as a last-minute replacement to host the upcoming AMA Supermoto National Championship Series season finale, Nov. 14-16.

The season finale was originally scheduled for Austin, Texas, but had to be moved because of complications. The weekend event will now take place at the Infineon Raceway Kart Center, which boasts a state-of-the-art track.

Infineon Raceway is no stranger to two-wheel racing, having hosted AMA road racing events on its traditional 12-turn road course since 1977. The facility has also hosted Supermoto USA events during its AMA weekend since 2006. This will mark its first time hosting the AMA Supermoto National Championships.

Australia’s Troy Herfoss takes an eight-point lead into the season finale in the Supermoto Premier class over Ohio’s Mark Burkhart (95-87). Michigan’s Chris Fillmore is third with 78 points. Petaluma resident Tyler O’Hara sits ninth entering the final weekend.

Championships will also be decided in the Supermoto Lites class and the Supermoto Unlimited class.

Two Bay Area riders are in the top five in Supermoto Lites – Pacifica’s Dave Casey is third (74) with Fairfield’s Casey Yarrow fifth (58). Anaheim’s Brandon Currie tops the leaderboard in the Lites division. San Clemente’s Darryl Atkins is in first place in the Supermoto Unlimited class entering the weekend —he has won the last two events.

Action gets under way on Friday with practice, heat races and main events in the Amateur Divisions beginning at 9:30 a.m. The scene shifts to the AMA Supermoto championship classes on Saturday and Sunday. Practice begins at 9:45 a.m. each day, with heat races beginning at 12:40 p.m. each day and main events set to take the green flag at 3 p.m. each day. A rider autograph session will be held on both Saturday and Sunday at 2:25 p.m.

British supermotard event, in the streets of Manchester

October 2008

SUPERMOTO moved into a new era at the weekend when Britain’s first ever inner-city event was staged at Sportcity, Manchester, home of the Manchester City football club.

As you would expect, all the winning in the S1 and S2 classes was done by Matt Winstanley on his 450 Robinsons KTM and Christian Iddon riding a factory 550 Aprilia. The overall win in the SXV class went to an on-form David Farmer, while Ollie Pope dominated the S3 class and Oliver Harrison was unbeaten in the S4 category.

A massive entry for the Clubman class had to be split into two groups. Lee Williams got the overall when the points where added up for all four races.

This is what supermoto needed. With the use of the main road into the complex, and a handy piece of waste ground next to it, combined with a massive car park, and a lot of hard work, the organisers had an interesting track within walking distance of a major city centre.

The corners were marked out with those red and white movable blocks used to make traffic lanes at road works. The straights in the car park were marked with straw bales and excellent jumps and banked turns were built up on the wasteland.

And there were paying spectators, not a lot, but more then has ever been seen at a Supermoto in this country so far – and that’s a good start.

Instead of the usual three races, an extra moto for all six classes, with double points, was added at the end of the day with the idea of it being run under floodlights.

However, after careful consideration, it was decided that while there was enough light to park a car by and walk to the football stadium, there wasn’t enough to race motorcycles at speed. So in the interests of safety the last block of races was tacked onto the other three and just concluded as the natural light was fading.

At the start of the first combined S1/S2 moto, Winstanley got the holeshot with Ady Smith in second, while Iddon, the leading S2 rider, was in third as the pack of 24 riders all made it round the first turn.

By the end of the first lap, the top three had already opened up a gap on the rest of the pack, headed by James Addy, Keith Farmer, Chris Hodgson and Richard Blakeman.

On lap four, as the leaders came out of the off-road section, Smith made an uncharacteristic mistake and slid off his bike, allowing Iddon and Farmer to move through.

By half-distance, as Winstanley and Iddon, disappeared into the distance only inches apart, Smith had regrouped, caught and passed Farmer for third spot.

Winstanley took his first win of the day, while Iddon crossed the finish line second, but topped the S2 category. Smith was a lonely third, with Hodgson fourth after a race-long tussle with Ricky Higgs and James Addy.

Once again Winstanley got the holeshot in race two, but this time he was followed by Iddon, with Smith just one place behind.

Just as in the opener, the two world championship riders cleared off into the distance from the rest of the pack. After ten laps they crossed the finish line just under one one-hundredth of a second apart – that’s close!

Supermotard track of Pleven in Bulgaria where 15,000 spectators showed up

PLEVEN (BULGARIA), 12 October 2008 – Edition three of the FIM SuperMoto of Nations was a close one on the fabulous track of Pleven in Bulgaria where 15,000 spectators showed up and even celebrated an unexpected home podium. Italy won with France taking second.

Team Bulgaria with Alexander Georgiev, Ales Hlad and Rosen Tonchev actually finished a solid third on their first ever podium that was decided in a breathtaking final moto.

Italy took the eventual victory despite the technical problems affecting Davide Gozzini in the opening heat. Ivan Lazzarini added a little bit of drama to the final heat crashing out at the beginning of lap two as Attilio Pignotti rode two solid heats to help the squad secure their second Francesco Zerbi Trophy.

Second on the rostrum was team France. Final moto winner Sylvain Bidart alongside SMoN debutants Adrien Goguet and Stephane Blot could not defend last year’s victory but went home with a promising second.

Great Britain was a virtual third in the final heat but took fourth eventually with the Czech Republic rounding off the top five.

HEAT 1 - S1+S2
Georgiev led the pack into turn one but pole sitter Lazzarini stormed up to first at the following turn. The Italian ran away with the lead and took the eventual victory as the fight for the runner up spot saw Georgiev getting busy in a battle with Winstanley. The Brit crashed and had to recover from fifth back to third as Georgiev was second. Bidart started from the back of the pack but moved up to a solid fourth leading team mate Goguet in the final laps. Hlad completed the top six for Bulgaria ahead of Gozzini suffering with a technical problem.

Top five: 1. Ivan Lazzarini (ITA, Aprilia), 18:30.452; ; 2. Alexander Georgiev (BUL, KTM), +0:06.533; 3. Matthew Winstanley (GBR, KTM), +0:08.779; 4. Sylvain Bidart (FRA, Husqvarna), +0:09.277; 5. Adrien Goguet (FRA, Husaberg), +0:14.820

Nations classification top five: Italy, Bulgaria, France, Great Britain, Spain

HEAT 2 – S2+OPEN
Gozzini took his revenge in the second moto starting off from the back of the group then recovering to first. Bocek took the holeshot, tried to escape but Gozzini took no prisoners and the Czech could not defend himself from the Italian. Both Bocek and early second place holder Tonchev dropped down to an eventual fifth and sixth respectively. Great Britain surprised with young gun Hodgson who rode to second despite this being his maiden experience on a 505cc KTM machine. France was third with Goguet who completed a stunning move on both Pignotti and Bocek in the sky section with only two laps to go. As the duo went on the inside finding a lapped rider Goguet was full gas on the outside and passed both at the same corner. Pignotti finished right behind in fourth.

Top five: 1. Davide Gozzini (ITA, TM), 18:43.043; ; 2. Chris Hodgson (GBR, KTM), +0:03.529; 3. Adrien Goguet (FRA, Husaberg), +0:07.808; 4. Attilio Pignotti (ITA, KTM), +0:08.206; 5. Jiri Bocek (CZE, Honda), +0:11.021

Nations classification top five: Italy, France, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Czech Republic

HEAT 3 – S1+OPEN
Lazzarini put himself on route to another victory after grabbing the holeshot but he lost the front end at the beginning of lap two handing the lead to Bidart. The Frenchman paid tribute to his number one plate and went on to win the final moto defending from a hungry Winstanley. The duo pulled away from third placed Lazzarini –the Italian recovered well after the crash- and with a bunch of laps remaining Winstanley cut the gap to only 0.3 seconds. With a strong final lap Bidart secured the victory ahead of Winstanley. Pignotti took fourth behind the Lazza with Bocek finishing once again fifth. Barragan was sixth for Spain as Bulgaria took a seventh and an eighth with Georgiev and Tonchev.

Top five: 1. Sylvain Bidart (FRA, Husqvarna), 18:20.671; ; 2. Matthew Winstanley (GBR, KTM), +0:00.891; 3. Ivan Lazzarini (ITA, Aprilia), +0:21.381; 4. Attilio Pignotti (ITA, KTM), +0:25.752; 5. Jiri Bocek (CZE, Honda), +0:27.893
