BMW Domination at European Cross Country 2008

BMW 450 Domination at Mattighofen

Simo Kirssi Finland

Simo Kirssi and his BMW G 450 X dominated the European XCC final at Mattighofen, Austria. The Finn took a convincing start-to-finish victory against some of the world’s best cross-country riders to claim the 2008 title. In doing so, the BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider had to step into the ‘Lion’s Den’, as Mattighofen is well known to be KTM territory – with the “orange” headquarters just a few kilometres down the road. There’s a healthy rivalry between the German and Austrian brand, yet this past weekend it was Kirssi who held the upper hand. It wasn’t for a lack of competition, though…

KTM had brought multiple world champion Samuli Aro and World Enduro Championship front-runner Alessandro Belometti. Husaberg had entered former junior champ Joakim Ljunggren, while Aprilia relied on Frenchman Antoine Lettelier. Kirssi, however, still rode in a class of his own. The 29-year-old didn’t let the slippery terrain or variety of obstacles get in his way – ruts, roots, up- or downhill!

The recently crowned German champ was in full control. After three laps Kirssi led by almost a minute, and would never look back. The only competitor going at a similar pace was Ljunggren, but Simo’s win was never really challenged, and credit also has to go to his team for providing a perfect pit stop.

Bert Meyer, the second rider on BMW Motorrad Motorsport’s cross-country team couldn’t participate due to an injury sustained at the WEC round in France. The young German – a likely podium contender at Mattighofen – was replaced by Gerhard Forster (the extreme race specialist and second-place finisher at the Red Bull Romaniacs last month) who rode a solid race to finish tenth.

Simo Kirssi BMW 450

Kirssi meanwhile won’t find a lot of time to rest, as his next outing will be the Indoor Enduro at Milan, held on 7 November.

Simo Kirssi: “After taking the holeshot I simply rode my own race. I enjoyed the beautiful weather and the terrific track with all its Enduro sections. It somehow reminded me of the conditions back home in Finland; the ground being wet and littered with deep ruts. Somehow I felt extremely thirsty today and that’s why I struggled with my concentration towards the end. I even touched a tree at one point, but it only cost me a few seconds. I’d like to thank my team for their fantastic effort this season, and an additional thanks goes to BMW for letting me ride this exceptional motorcycle.”

French KTM factory rider take victory near of the Giza Pyramids in Egypt

David Casteu rode his KTM 690 Rally to overall victory in the seven-stage Pharaons Rally, a welcome return to the sand and the African continent after the last minute cancellation of the Dakar in January 2008 following terrorist threats.
A large crowd assembled to see the French KTM factory rider take victory against the majestic backdrop of the Giza Pyramids in Egypt with a slim margin ahead of teammate Frans Verhoeven (KTM 690 Rally) of the Netherlands.

Italian Alessandro Zanotti was third. Casteu and Verhoeven share line honours Casteu was joined at the 45 km mark of what was a long 342 km final stage by Verhoeven who then rode together for the remainder of the race.

The stage victory went to Verhoeven while Casteu, who dominated the 2008 edition of the Pharaons, finished with overall honours, his fist victory in a race that is valid for the World Championship.

The Frenchman will now be a serious contender for the next Dakar Rally, to be held in South America in January 2009. Perfect Dakar preparation, Casteu says “It took me a week to fine tune my physical condition and my riding style but it was especially my navigation over very difficult terrain that has provided the perfect preparation for my next Dakar,” Casteu said after the race. Winning the trophy was simply the icing on the cake.”

Verhoeven satisfied with close second finish Teammate Verhoeven was quick to congratulate Casteu saying he really deserved the victory.

“I am also quite satisfied with my performance because it has been a long time since I rode in the desert. This rally has shown that my skill level is very satisfactory even if I still need more experience in navigation. It was very satisfying finishing just a minute and a half behind David after 3000 kilometres of desert race.”

Seven of the top 10 riders in this year’s rally rode KTM 690 Rally machines, underlining the dominance of the KTM “Made in Austria” brand.
